Te Urewera National Park - the largest national park in the North Island, 'one of the great forests of the world'

Te Urewera National Park

Rugged, remote and immense, Te Urewera National Park is the largest in the North Island. Its isolation and difficulty in getting to it have made it a paradise for wildlife and, apart from the weka, has a full complement of native birds.

This glorious national park is so vast and wild that there are large tracts that have not yet been explored. It is an area steeped in history, where the local people live in the embrace of their heritage on ancestral land, fundamental to their culture.

Murupara is just a 45 minute drive from Rotorua and is the gateway to this exceptional slice of pristine paradise. From Murupara visitors may access the Whirinaki Forest Park, which botanist David Bellamy described as ‘one of the great forests of the world’, and the stunning Te Urewera National Park - famous for the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk.

Whirinaki Forest Park - A true forest of magnificent proportions, the Whirinaki Forest Park is alive with giant trees, rushing rivers and the reverberation of a desperate struggle to save this remarkable, unique forest from being milled. One cannot help but be inspired by these ancient, gigantic trees; rimu, totara, kahikatea, matai and miro.

Popular recreation activities within the park include short walks, multi-day tramps, hunting, horse trekking, four wheel driving, bird watching, fishing, camping, and mountain biking.

Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk - Located in the South-East corner of the park. Covering approximately half the circumference of this stunning, sparkling lake, this walk can be completed independently or as part of an organised group. The deepest lake in the North Island, Lake Waikaremoana is surrounded by magnificent forest and is a popular destination for tramping, fishing, mountain biking and boating.
